Social Media Tracking: Are You Making Money?

You will generally need to regularly track the results of your promotions on the social media, in order for you to

  • Know how much you are making through the social media
  • Know if you are making as much as you may have planned to make in your business through the social media within a specific period of time
  • Know where you will need to promote next in order to sell and profit on the social media

You should ideally have set up an ad tracking software/system for your business and website, that can help you with these.

In order for you to know how much you may have made or if are making money from the social media in your business, you should ideally get some report on this from your ad tracking software/system. You should generally get such reports for your business, on a regular basis.

A (Demo) Example Report

The figure below is an example of the type of report, that you may need to generate from your ad tracking software/system, on how much you are making through the social media, in your business. This example is for a one year period, you may however create the same type of report for some days, a week, a month etc too.

How you work at your social media marketing, and the level, amount and the type of skills, expertise, tools, money, time and resources, that you choose to commit to your social media marketing, are what will determine the extent or the type of results or profits, that you will get or achieve through the social media in your business, within any specific period of time.

The following are some explanation on the demo report above.

Total Costs ($)
This is the total costs of promoting and marketing a single product on the social media (for this demo business) within a year, on five social media sites, that is, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google+.

Total Revenue ($)
The total revenue that was made by our demo business, from the five social media sites within a year.

Total of Net Profit ($)
The total net profit that was made by our demo business within a year.

Total Number of Sales
The total number of sales that was made by our demo business within a year.

Organic Content & Promotions (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through organic content and promotions within a year, by our demo business.

Social Media Influencers (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through social media influencers within a year, by our demo business.

Social Media Advocates (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through social media advocates within a year, by our demo business.

Other Social Media Users (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through other social media users within a year, by our demo business.

Paid Ads (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through paid ads from Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter within a year, by our demo business.

Social Media Groups (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made through social media groups from Pinterest, LinkedIn and Google+ within a year, by our demo business.

Social Media Shops/Stores (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made within a year, through the social media shops/stores there were set up on Facebook and Pinterest, by our demo business.

Buy Buttons (Sales)
The total number of sales that was made by our demo business within a year, through social media buy buttons on Facebook and Pinterest.

Number of Targets
The total (unique) number of people that actually came to or visited this business and its website from each of the five social media sites within a year.

Number of Newsletter Subscribers
This is the total number of newsletter subscribers that our demo business got through each of the five social media sites within a year.

Number of Leads
This is the total number of leads that our demo business got through the five social media sites within a year.

Reach
This is the total number of people that our demo business, was able to reach with its content and posts, on each of the five social media sites, within a year.

Engagement Rate (%)
This is the average engagement rate for our demo business within a year, it is a combination of the different engagement rates for the business’ content and posts throughout the year.

Clickthrough Rate (%)
This is the average clickthrough rate for our demo business within a year, it is a combination of the different clickthrough rates for the business’ content and posts throughout the year.

Likes
This is the total number of likes that our demo business got, from each of the five social media sites, within a year.

Followers
This is the total number of followers that our demo business got, from each of the five social media sites, within a year.

Shares
This is the total number of shares that our demo business got, from each of the five social media sites, within a year.

You can define and track more metrics than these in your business. How comprehensive your ad tracking software/system reporting is, will generally determine what you can track, in your own business.
